Focus on the pain, or focus on the progress

Updated: Dec 18, 2020

Setting myself up for front squats at 10 pounds heavier than the previous sets at which I struggled taught me about the power of our minds. The questions we ask ourselves and how we approach challenges determines our success.

"Is it going to feel heavier?" - Yes.

"Is it too heavy?" - No.

"Can I handle it?" - Yes.

Well, okay then. If you are about to do something that is a little more challenging, then mentally prepare for it to feel harder. But don't shy away from the challenge and give up. Go into the challenge prepared that it will be hard, but you can push through it.

Training has become so mental for me with this approach. I took the same mentality to our hill workout a few days later. I felt so sore and sluggish. But I asked myself the same question - "is it going to be hard?... Yes, but I can still do it." I also told myself,

"You can focus on the pain, or you can focus on the progress".

That really helped me get through the workout and change my attitude. Instead of focusing on "oh my gosh, my legs are so sore. I am so tired. This is so hard". I instead told myself, "you are building so much speed, power, and strength. This is making you better and getting you where you want to go."

Put a positive spin on your workouts or challenges. Every challenge you face is a test of your attitude and resilience. Do you want to come out on top?

P.S. Check out a recap of Squatober training cycle using this process-oriented mentality!
