The holidays can put added pressure on us through extra travel, gatherings, family obligations, meals, etc. I personally really enjoyed the time spent with my family this year, but was a little anxious around building in the extra time for loved ones and meeting any expectations (created in my mind). By end of the week, I felt so emotionally spent for seemingly going non-stop doing different holiday activities to the point that I was torn from not being able to get everything else I wanted to get done around my own chores and training. I am thankful to have a family to do these things with, but am also thankful to my resume normal routine!
In all of this holiday chaos of not feeling like I had adequate time to myself, I fell into a negative thought process. One that was not in the present moment - anticipating getting away to do something else more productive or preferred, which created a little internal tension.
This year I have been so much better mentally in practice, but the holidays is another time to keep practicing that positive mindset. If you slip into that negative mindset outside of practice, it will carry over into practice. And vice versa!
Here's a reminder that we control 4 things that I learned from a recent interview with Damon West: we can control what we think, feel, say, and do. If you relinquish control of any of those things, you will become a prisoner of your mind.
With that in mind, keep a positive thought process. And remember, you control the energy you bring! Focus on the PROCESS. Not the results. It's much more enjoyable that way. Strive for progress, not perfection. Some days are better than others. Know that you may have to work through more sluggish days and that's part of the process :)
