Texas Expo: Refuse to Change and you will Remain the Same

This weekend was very uplifting and motivating. Being reunited with my pole vault family and meeting new incredible people was so much fun. In COVID times it can be hard to feel connected to other people or have many competitive opportunities, but this event was a great way to bring us all together in good spirits to bring in the new year.

I felt ready to jump high. Physically I am capable of jumping 4.60m any day. I am fast and powerful on the runway. I am becoming a better pole vaulter technically. My mentality is much improved from last year. I am much more confident on the runway, going up poles or grips, and executing good attempts.

I only jumped 4.15m. What could I have done better to achieve a more satisfying result? Was it mental or physical?

The answer is both. At 4.30m, I got a little more excited and lost control in my run past my mid into the box. My hands were a little late as a result and I lost energy in the delivery through the box, rather than transferring as much speed and power as possible when it was most necessary.

“Change occurs when the pain of staying the same becomes more painful than change itself.” Focus on the results and you will not get change. Focus on making the changes in the process and you will get the results you want.

1. Carry speed into box from a mid past 36' and takeoff past 11'

2. Early hands into full expansion through chest and right shoulder
